iTune Referrals
DISH Remote Access
Despite the information I received from their customer service, you can use the DISH Remote Access even if you are an AT&T Dish customer. This must be a new feature because I tried it last year and it would not let me in. The online registration process now lets you enter your DVR ID number instead of your non-existant Customer Number in the registration form. You can find your DVD ID in the setup menus on your DVR.

CBS 11 News Dallas/Ft. Worth
With the winter weather rolling in across the metroplex I was actually watching the news and spotted a commercial for a new local news app. The big CNN and FoxNews apps file fine for getting national or sometimes international news but they have no local content. A couple of days ago I was stuck in traffic and thought that there would be something on the news about the accident up ahead. This app shows a trend toward localized content. Now you can get current local DFW news on your iPhone.
Siri Assistant
Just ask Siri to book restaurants, movies, taxis and more (built for 3GS phones and works only in the US).
This is another innovative approach to search. Siri attempts to listen to what you say and carry on a conversation with you. The speech recognition is really good. Apple should buy this technology and build it into the OS.
World Tour (trip memories)
For years I have kept notes on my travel and I have looked for a way to keep those notes other than the series of text files I have now. I'm trying out this app as an alternative. My only worry at this point is for the lack of backup and export ability.
Dollhouse: Epitaph One
The TV series Dollhouse is coming to an end tonight. The Series Finale is called Epitaph Two which begs the question, "what happened to Epitaph One?". Epitaph One was the name of the 13th episode (wikipedia.org). It is required viewing if you want to know what is going on in the Finale. The name is also significant because the penultimate episode had its own little epitaph to wrap up most of the story lines of the series.
iSaidWhat?!
This is a slick audio editing application that is geared to making joke audio clips. It has a slick user interface and easy access to Email, Facebook and Twitter to share your creations.
Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief
The telethon for Haiti is available on iTunes for $2.99. 100% of the proceeds from the TV special will go to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF, United Nations World Food Programme, and Yéle Haiti Foundation.
Bento
Version 3 of Bento increases the usefulness of FileMaker's database for the rest of us. This app allows you to sync databases with your desktop version ($49). You can use it to track project or most anything. It comes with numerous templates and more are available in the marketplace.
MotionX GPS Drive
In the category of iPhone navigation systems there are a lot of choices. TomTom has a solution that will set you back $100. By comparison this app is only 99¢. How does it compare? Actually it ranks pretty well. It does a good job of getting the directions and presenting them on the screen. You can use the find screen to look for gas or coffee shops along your route. You can play music while you drive without leaving the app.
TripDeck - The Travel Itinerary Manager
I really like TripIt.com to keeping track of my travel plans. Their iPhone app is alright but it is a read-only view of your plans. Items like the maps require internet access. The folks at Mobiata have taken this a step further. Presently it is still read-only from TripIt but they promise to send updates back in a future version. For now it is sufficient to be able to add notes on you iPhone on the go. The GUI is very pretty. TripDeck offers additional features that require Internet access but give you updated flight status, gate and even baggage claim information on the go.
James Cameron's Avatar
Gameloft has put together a game featuring elements from the new Movie. It appears to be similar to the Star Wars Force Unleashed games. The reviews are all raving about the animation and graphics.
The Boy Scout Handbook
Every once in a while an application comes along that makes sense. At first glance this is one of them. It may not be practical for those weekend camping trips but on a weekly basis this could help assure that a scout or scout leader always had the reference material on hand.
Avatar (Music from the Motion Picture)
Fourteen songs with a very tribal edge to the standard Horner epic score. The iTunes version comes with a Digital Booklet.
JotNot Scanner
This is a very handy program that uses the built-in camera to collect, crop and optimize pictures of documents effectively giving you a mobile scanner. You can save documents out as PDF and multi-page PDF. It also supports Evernote.
TomTom U.S.A.
Special Price until December 28th.
GPS coverage of just the US without that Canadian distraction
IMDb
IMDb is one of my most frequented web sites. Now you can access the ultimate movie database right in your phone.
foursquare
I heard about a new site from the folks who brought us DodgeBall.com. They are doing something similar to Latitude but with a social networking game aspect. It's free. I'm trying it out but I'm not quite convinced. It seems this is something that would be extremely useful at a conference of sporting event but I'm not sure it is practical for every day use. Presently it lacks the critical mass necessary to get the chain reaction going. It may be something to keep an eye on to see if it catches on. The local focus is almost right. I think it is a little too loose in its model.
Dragon Dictation
This little application really shows you the power of that hand-held computer with the little fruit icon on the back. You can record a little audio and have it automatically convert it to text. It uses the Dragon® Naturally Speaking® engine to achieve amazing results. Once you have your text on the screen you can copy it to another application and save yourself the trouble of typing it in. It has quick buttons for text messages and mail. You can get to any other application via the clipboard. This is the kind of tool that really needs to be part of the OS.
AT&T Mark the Spot
If I'm talking on the phone while driving home, I know that as soon as I make a particular turn the call I'm on will get dropped -- every time. It happens on the terminus between 3G and Edge networks for me. Finally there's an app to make you feel like you are being heard. The next time you have a dropped call, or lack of signal, or a data network problem, whip out this free app and let AT&T know.
Angels & Demons
Ron Howard's latest screen presentation of a Dan Brown novel is now on iTunes with DVD Extra content.
MiCasa Lite
Home automation is process of controlling your home via remote control, with timers, or with sensors. Back in college my roommate had X-10 modules throughout the apartment to control the lights at all hours. Today X-10 has been replaced by INSTEON. I recently bought a controller and have been shopping for software to control it. I have not had good luck with the desktop software.
Star Trek
J.J. Abrams’ vision was not only to create a Star Trek that was a bigger, more action-packed spectacle but also to make the spectacle feel real. Every aspect of production—from unique locations to the use of classic Hollywood camera tricks—was guided by this overall objective.
Up
If you're considering buying the new Pixar movie "Up", consider buying it on iTunes. For $14.99 you get a DVD-like experience right in iTunes complete with 4 Pixar Shorts. For $5 more you get the HD version. Both will play on your AppleTV.
JellyCar
I had someone ask me out of the blue when JellyCar 2 would be released. I had no idea since I had never heard of JellyCar 1. A quick Google revealed with definitive certainty that the new version was due to be released last week.
GoDaddy.com Mobile
GoDaddy has released an iPhone app. It shows more promise than it actually delivers. You can log in but them you cannot do anything with your account. This feature is pending. You can search for domains but it is not very useful as a whois tool. It's a good start and its free. I hope when the account management feature is enabled that it is very functional. I want to be able to manage my DNS specifically.
RedLaser
I've tried other bar code readers but this is the first one that seems to work every time. It is extremely fast and accurate. Point your iPhone at the bar code and before you know it you are looking at a list of that product with links and prices to buy it. I have only tested it on the iPhone 3GS so I do not know the performance yet on the original camera. I tried it using a bar code that was partially covered with tape and some sort of glue film but RedLaser didn't falter and found the book almost immediately. It showed me that I paid way too much. The price is just $1.99.
Battlestar Galactica: The Plan
I'm surprised it was not featured more prominently in the iTunes Store but it is there. It is listed under TV Shows as its own Season. The price seems reasonable. It is TV-MA rated.

TripIt
When I travel I keep my plans in a combination of on my calendar, in my email, and in notepad so I can refer to them while on my trip. TripIt.com is a web site that lets you aggregate your travel plans in one place and download them to your iPhone. They have a unique service that lets you simply email your itinerary to them and they will post it on your Trips list.
Rock Band
Now you can play Rock Band right on your iPhone. This is definitely a 1.0 app. It is sluggish and buggy and for $10 it is overpriced. Check out Tap Tap Revenge 3 instead.
IM+
On the Mac desktop there is a great application called Adium X that can be used to connect to various chat services. It's not as good as iChat for some things. Because it can connect to myriad services all at the same time it is a great tool for chat. On the iPhone there is a similar application. Like Adium it can connect to several services all at the same time. IM+ can connect to Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo!IM, MSN, Facebook, Skype, MySpace, Twitter, and ICQ -- all at the same time. In addition, you can have multiple accounts of the same type.
Stargate: Universe
I was a real fan of the Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlinoriginal movie that came out in 1994 starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. I always like movies that take historical facts and turn them upside down. This movie had a great plot and good action without insulting your intelligence.
Tweetie 2
Tweetie is probably the best application for Twitter on the iPhone. The author has turned a weekend project into a business. If you want to learn about to make your own Twitter client I recommend the Stanford iTunes U course on the iPhone. The author took a great program and brought it to the desktop. He took what he learned on the desktop and scaled it back down for the iPhone. Presenting Tweetie 2. Yes, you will need to pay the $2.99 again but this is well worth the upgrade price. The author has added so many enhancements to make the tweeting experience smooth on the phone.
Satellite Heart
The soundtrack for New Moon is scheduled to be released on October 20th. You can get the first single now. I like the acoustic guitar sound. The song is also included if you pre-order the whole album on iTunes.
HP 15C Scientific Calculator
This app is an exact replica of the HP 15C Scientific Calculator with the original layout, functions, algorithms and calculations sequences that have been trusted by millions of engineers since 1981. At $29.99 this calculator is being sold for its nostalgia and for its features. This calculator originally sold for $135 in the 1980's.
HP 12C Financial Calculator
People don't carry calculators like they used to. They rely on computers or the calculators that come in their cell phones. For most people this is fine but we've lost the specialized calculator. On of the best selling calculators of all time was the HP 12C Financial Calculator. Now you can have that calculator with you right on your iPhone. At $14.99 this is a real bargain. HP sells a few other calculators too such as the HP 12C Platinum, and the HP 15C Scientific Calculator.
HP 12C Platinum Financial Calculator
This calculator gives you access to the financial functions of the HP 12C but in RPN format. If you are not familiar with RPN then that may not mean much to you. RPN is a time-saving way of entering calculations on a calculator. At $19.99 this calculator is being sold more for its nostalgia rather than for its features. HP sells a few other calculators too such as the HP 12C, and the HP 15C Scientific Calculator.
The Airborne Toxic Event
I'm off to see The Airborne Toxic Event tonight in Dallas with my son. I'm not really sure who they are. I recognize at least one of their songs (Sometime Around Midnight) and like it. Here's a link to the entire album on iTunes.
CNN Mobile
The power of CNN in your hands.
CNN has released their new news app to compete with other news apps already on the phone like USA Today and FOX News. Unlike those other apps the CNN app has a pricetag associated with it. The cost for this app is $1.99. For your two bucks you get a rich interactive application that lets you watch live video. The app also features the iReport module that does the same thing as the AP News reporter app does and lets the average user submit their photos and videos to CNN right from their phone.
Quickoffice Mobile Office Suite
Create, Open & Edit Word (.DOCX) & Excel (.XLSX) filr for 2007 Windows and 2008 Macintosh.
Rescue Cleaner
Is your iPhone/iTouch screen dirty? Then Rescue Cleaner is the app for you!
Rescue Cleaner has lots of dogs just waiting to help clean your screen. You can have Fargo the Landseer Newfoundland, Tina the Golden Retriever, Woodie the Greyhound or any of the other dogs clean your screen. Just select one and watch them go to work cleaning your screen.
The Lost Symbol iPhone App
Iceberg Reader by ScrollMotion, Inc. is yet another way to read Dan Brown's new novel The Lost Symbol. Instead of paying $9.99 for the Kindle Edition you can pay just 2.5X that amount and get a version of the novel that will only play on your iPhone/iPod and is not guaranteed to keep working for future software upgrades. That's even more than the $16.17 for the hard cover edition. The whole idea of an electronic book is that it is less expensive but you don't have the ability to resell it.
Camerabag
Thanks to @Moneta for sharing this app with me. She posted a picture from Coney Island that looked like it was taken in 1974. It made me want to try out this app. It takes your pictures on your iPhone and lets you apply some interesting filters. Each filter has a different personality that you can guess based on their names: Instant, 1962, 1974, Magazine, Mono, Cinema, Infrared, Fisheye, and Helga. I'm not really sure about Helga. Instant makes your picture look like a Polaroid Instamatic picture. I've included an example of an old pick-up truck below.
