MotionX GPS Drive
In the category of iPhone navigation systems there are a lot of choices. TomTom has a solution that will set you back $100. By comparison this app is only 99¢. How does it compare? Actually it ranks pretty well. It does a good job of getting the directions and presenting them on the screen. You can use the find screen to look for gas or coffee shops along your route. You can play music while you drive without leaving the app.
The app comes with 30 days of voice service. The voice service really makes this app come to life. After the 30 days they want $3/month to keep that voice. That works out to $36/year which is still cheaper than the TomTom. I could see me letting the voice expire and then turning it back on again when I have a road trip.
I put this app to use this week driving around an unfamiliar city. The app performed really well in the canyon of buildings downtown. It occasionally got confused in a parking lot. In traffic it did not quite get the time down of when to tell me to get ready to turn. One real annoyance is when it would go silent. I would risk a glance at the screen to find out that a pop-up message was hovering over the navigation screen rendering it mute. This is a problem.
In summary the 99¢ price tag makes this app an no-brainer to purchase. Unlike other navigation apps in this price range, this one actually works.
